One of the few players to play outside of Korea, he became the first to play in Italy's Serie A when he had a loan spell at Perugia from Pusan Icons at the end on the 1999-2000 season.
Several excellent appearances and reviews led to the loan being extended to the end of the 2001-02 season. He is an excellent reader of the game and is great passer of the ball.
At the 2002 World Cup, after coming on as a sub, he scored the vital goal that earned a 1-1 Group D draw against USA in Daegu.
In the Second Round, he wrote his name into football and Korean folklore. Ironically against Italy, he missed an early penalty but more than made up with a Golden Goal winner as the Korea Republic became only the second country from Asia to reach the quarter finals of the World Cup. They other was North Korea in 1966 who reached the last 8 by beating Italy!
He played in all seven of Korea's games in the 2002 World Cup finals.
Ahn reinforced his national hero status with the winner in Korea's opening game of the 2006 finals against Togo in Germany. It was Korea's first ever World Cup finals win on foreign soil.
