Comments:

League position: 5th Manolo Gabbiadini's goal ended a club record run of nine hours and 16 minutes without scoring a league goal at home (576 minutes). They had failed to score in their last six home Premier League games. Only Manchester City had a longer such drought in the competition's history (eight games from January to May in 2007). Charlie Austin's late penalty meant the Saints avoided equalling their longest Premier League run without a win at home of seven matches set from December 1996 to March 1997 and April to October 1998. Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino said: "It was a difficult game because we had everything under control after a sending off and two goals. This is football. West Ham are a strong team and they won a lot of balls in our box. It was a nice game to see, but difficult for a manager to be in."

League position: 20th West Ham United had now lost both of their opening two league games of a season for the first time since 2010-11 when they went on to suffer their second relegation from the Premier League. Marko Arnautovic had now been sent off against Southampton in each of his last two Premier League appearances against them. Javier Hernández had now scored all 39 of his goals in the Premier League from inside the penalty area. Winston Reid was originally named in the starting line-up before suffering a calf injury in the pre-match warm-up. Angelo Ogbonna was promoted to the starting XI so West Ham United named only six of a possible seven substitutes West Ham United manager Slaven Bilic said: "Great team spirit; character; we didn't give up, and showed quality to play with ten men for such a long period of time. It's extremely hard, especially when you're one down. We spoke at half-time and they responded in the best possible way to what we asked of them. I'm gutted, but we gained a lot of things from the performance."
