Comments:

Newcastle United had now taken only one point from their last six opening games in a Premier League season at St James' Park. Callum Wilson had now scored nine goals against West Ham United in the Premier League; three more goals than he had scored against any other opposition in the division. Freddie Woodman became the eighth goalkeeper to save a penalty on his debut in the Premier League and first since Cardiff City’s Neil Etheridge against AFC Bournemouth on 11 August 2018.

Comments:

West Ham United avoided equalling the all-time record for a team losing their opening game in the most consecutive seasons in the top division; six by Burnley from 1891 to 1896 and Grimsby Town from 1934 to 1946 (both League Division One). They scored four or more goals in their opening game of a league season for the first time since a 4-0 win against Birmingham City at Upton Park in League Division One in 1983. With his 47th goal, Michail Antonio became the Hammers' joint-leading goalscorer in the Premier League along with Paolo Di Canio. Aaron Cresswell's goal was initially disallowed for offside but the decision was subsequently overturned following a VAR review.
