Comments:

League position: 10th With manager Alan Pardew watching Crystal Palace's game at Aston Villa prior to his widely anticipated move to the London club, assistant manager John Carver took caretaker charge of Newcastle United for this game. United have yet to lose a New Year's Day game at St James' Park in the Premier League (now won four and drawn two). Jack Colback's goal was the 500th in the Premier League in 2014-15.

Comments:

League position: 19th Burnley fielded an unchanged starting XI for the sixth game in a row. They became the first team to make three substitutions before half-time in a Premier League game since 7 February 2009 by both Wigan Athletic (versus Fulham) and Stoke City (at Sunderland).
