Comments:

League position: 2nd Manchester City had now lost one of their last 24 home games in the Premier League (won 14). Sergio Agüero now became the highest non-European goalscorer in the history of the Premier League as he surpassed Dwight Yorke's record toal of 123 goals. He had now scored in all six of his Premier League appearances against Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium so becoming the fourth player in Premier League history to score in six consecutive home appearances against the same team (also Alan Shearer against Everton, Thierry Henry against Aston Villa and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink against West Ham United). Gabriel Jesus had now scored ten goals in his 14 appearances in the Premier League. Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said: “Two teams in that level when you play ten against 11 for 50 minutes is a good advantage. But we played ten against 11 against Everton and we were better and deserved to win. It was not possible. Today sometimes it is not easy to play against ten, but we did it well. The second goal helped us a lot. We had to find the right moment with Sergio, Kevin de Bruyne and David Silva. We had patience to do that."

League position: 7th This result was Jürgen Klopp's heaviest defeat in all competitions as Liverpool manager and his joint-heaviest in his managerial career (a 6-1 defeat when with Mainz against Werder Bremen in October 2006). This was now also Jürgen Klopp's first Premier League defeat away from home to one of last season's top seven teams; played ten, won five, drawn four. Since being promoted back to the top division in 1962, this was only the third time that Liverpool had lost a league game by a five-goal margin (also 7-2 at Tottenham Hotspur on 15 April 1963 and 6-1 at Stoke City on 24 May 2015). Sadio Mané became the second player to be sent-off when playing for and against the Reds in the Premier League after Dietmar Hamann. Liverpool had kept a clean sheet in six of their preceding seven games in the Premier League. Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp said: “It [the sending-off] was an accident. A very unlucky situation. I think everyone knows he didn’t see the goalie. There was not one second he looks at the goalie. He just wanted to get the ball as soon as possible. Hopefully the goalie is not seriously injured.”
