Kick-off: 3.00pm local
Liverpool won 6-5 on penalties.
Extra time not played.
This was the first time that the FA Charity Shield had been played at Wembley Stadium.
Prior to his FA Charity Shield game, the teams shared the shield for six months each in the event of a drawn game.
In a bad tempered match both Billy Bremner and Kevin Keegan were sent-off for fighting. As they left the pitch, both threw their shirts to the ground and were subsequently each banned for 11 games and fined £500. Keegan had also been dismissed in a friendly match four days earlier at Kaiserlauten.
In a strange quirk in this game, no player from either team wore the number 10 shirt. As a result Phil Boersma started the match wearing the number 12 for Liverpool while Eddie Gray was the number 12 for Leeds United.
