Kick-off 1.00pm local (5.00pm BST) Man of the Match: Gianluigi Buffon (Italy) Assistant referees: Marvin Torrentera (Mexico) Marcos Quintero (Mexico) Fourth official: Mark Geiger (United States) Fifth official: Mark Hurd (United States) The two teams had met in eight previous matches, including twice in the FIFA World Cup (1970, group stage: Italy 0–0 Uruguay; 1990, round of 16: Italy 2–0 Uruguay). Their most recent meeting was in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup third place match, won by Italy 3–2 on penalties (2–2 draw after extra time). Uruguay's qualification to the knockout stages and Italy's elimination was sensationally overshadowed as Luis Suarez was, once again, accused of biting an opponent. Just a minute before Diego Godin scored the goal that took the South Americans into the last 16, Liverpool striker Suarez appeared to bite Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini. As the incident went unnoticed by the referee, Italy were furious at the manner of their defeat as they came to terms with a second World Cup in a row in which they have failed to go beyond the group stages. Meanwhile, Suarez was left facing the prospect of a another lenghty ban as he has twice been suspended for biting opponents. He was given a ten-game ban for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic's arm during a Premier League match in April 2013. Suarez was also suspended for seven games for biting PSV Eindhoven's Otman Bakkal's shoulder while Ajax captain in 2010.
