It was the sixth meeting between the two nations at the European Championship finals, making it the tournament's most played fixture. Italy made the vital break through just after the half-hour when David De Gea couldn't hold on to a free-kick and Giorgio Chiellini pounced. It was the first goal that Spain had conceded in the knock-out stages of the Euros since 2000. They sank to their first two-goal defeat in the European Championship finals since 1988 when Graziano Pelle sealed a deserved Italy win in added time at the end of the game. While the Italians now faced a quarter-final meeting with Germany, it was the sad end of an era for Spain as this was celebrated coach Vicente Del Bosque's last game in charge.
