Kick-off: 9.00pm local (8.00pm BST) For Ray Houghton in 1994, read Robbie Brady in 2016. Needing a repeat of their famous win against Italy in the World Cup 22 years earlier in New York, Ireland made it through to the knock-out stages of the European Championship finals for the first time at the third attempt. Despite a whole-hearted often frantic effort, time appeared to be running out for the Republic until a Norwich City combination stuck gold in the 85th minute as a tempting cross from Wes Hoolahan was headed home by Brady. Italy were assured of top spot in Group E before the final group games kicked-off. Manager Antonio Conte made eight changes from their previous game. This was their first defeat in 13 competitive games under Conte and the first goal they had conceded in their last five games. For the Irish, it ended a run of seven Euro finals games without a win and began a party the like of which the streets of Lille had never seen before. Irish eyes were well and truly smiling!
