Comments:

This was the first time that the reigning champions had lost their first game of the new season since Arsenal lost at Manchester United on the opening day of the 1989-90 season. Current Hull City caretaker manager Mike Phelan - who was taking charge of a Premier League game for the first time - made his debut for Manchester United in that game. At the 11th attempt, this was the first time that the newly-promoted Tigers had beaten the reigning English league champions in a competitive game. [c/o Amber Nectar] Sam Clucas, who played for Leicester City in his youth career, had now played in the Conference, League Two, League One, League Championship and Premier League in consecutive seasons. Adama Diomande scored in the first minute of added time in the first half.
