Comments:

League position: 15th This was the second time since 1962 that Cardiff City had played a first home game of a top division season. Kenedy's penalty in the fifth minute of added time at the end of the game was saved. Goalkeeper Neil Etheridge had now saved a penalty in the first two games of this Premier League season; the only two games he had played in the Premier League. He became the first goalkeeper to save a penalty in consecutive Premier League appearances in the same season since Thomas Sorensen for Sunderland in December 2009 and the second goalkeeper to save a penalty in both of his first two Premier League appearances (also Erik Thorstvedt for Tottenham Hotspur in August 1992). The Bluebirds avoided losing their opening two league games of a season for the first time since 1994-95. City failed to score in three consecutive league games for the first time since November 2015.

Comments:

League position: 12th Newcastle United had now failed to win their opening away game in their last six seasons in the Premier League (lost four). Isaac Hayden became the first substitute to be shown a straight red in the Premier League since Hal Robson-Kanu for West Bromwich Albion against Burnley on 19 August 2017. This was Rafael Benítez's 50th game in the Premier League as Newcastle United's manager (won 15, lost 22). Since leaving Liverpool in 2010, he had now drawn two and lost five of his seven away games in the Premier League against newly promoted teams.
