City had now won the League Cup in five of the last seven seasons, and became the second team to do so in three consecutive years. Liverpool won it in four consecutive years (1981 to 1984). This was the ninth time that Aston Villa had reached the League Cup final. Only Liverpool had played in more (12). Villa became the fourth newly-promoted Premier League team to reach a League Cup final. Leicester City (1996-97) and Blackburn Rovers (2001-02) both won while Wigan Athletic (2005-06) lost. Comments:

Sir Alex Ferguson, Brian Clough and José Mourinho (four each) were now the only managers to lift the League Cup more often than Pep Guardiola (three). He became the second manager to win the League Cup in three consecutive seasons after Bob Paisley. Sergio Agüero, Fernandinho and David Silva had now equalled Ian Rush’s competition record of five League Cup final wins.
