FIFA Confederations Cup, 1992

The first intercontinental championships took place when Saudi Arabia invited the champions of each confederation to play in the King Fahd Cup. Saudi Arabia were seeking an opportunity to promote their national team on the world stage.

With only four teams competing the first round of the competition was effectively a semi-final.

Saudi Arabia shocked USA in the opener. They dominated the Americans to win 3 - 0.

American players speak of the unique atmosphere they played in that day. Out of respect, the entire crowd rose in tandem with their King throughout the match.

In the other match Argentina easily overcame the threat of Ivory Cost. Their side included famous names such as Gabriel Batistuta and Diego Simione.

Again, in the final Argentine quality shone through as they beat the hosts 3 - 1.
