AFC Asian Cup qualification 2023
The qualification procedure for the AFC Asian Cup 2023 final tournament consisted of four rounds.
1st qualifying round and 2nd qualifying round
The first two rounds were also part of the qualification procedure for Asian nations in the FIFA World Cup 2022 finals in Qatar.
1st qualifying round

• Played in June 2019.
• 12 nations competed in six ties played over two legs.
• The six winners advanced to the 2nd qualifying round.

2nd qualifying round

• Played from September 2019 to June 2021.
• A total of 40 nations were divided into eight groups of five (A to H) played home and away on a round-robin basis.
• Eight group winners, four best runners-up plus hosts China PR advance to the Finals.
• 22 nations advance to the 3rd qualifying round.
• The four lowest fifth placed nations enter the Play-off round

Play-off round

• Played in October 2021.
• Four nations competed in two ties played over two legs.
• The two winners advanced to the 3rd qualifying round.

3rd qualifying round

• Played in June 2022.
• A total of 24 nations were divided into six groups of four (A to F) played home and away on a round-robin basis.
• The six group winners and best five runners-up advance to the Finals along with the 13 nations who qualified after the 2nd qualifying round.
