On this day in football history

1934 Tottenham Hotspur beat Corinthians 7-4 at White Hart Lane in the last ever Sheriff of London Shield. The competition was introduced in 1898 and was contested between the top professional and top amateur side of the season. There were no competitions between 1907 and 1931 but the Shield was re-introduced in 1932 to mark Corinthians Jubilee Year when they lost 9-2 to Arsenal.
1936 Harold Wightman on being appointed manager of Second Division Nottingham Forest became the first paid official to have worked for clubs in all four Football League sections within the space of one year. He had previously been manager of Luton Town (Division Three South) until 10/10/1935, Derby County Chief Scout (Division One) until November 16th 1935 and Mansfield Town manager (Division Three North) on 14th January 1936.
1953 A memorable day in FA Cup history as Blackpool beat Bolton Wanderers 4-3 in what became known as the "Matthews Final".
1959 Syd Owen played his last game for Luton Town. He captained the side beaten 2-1 by Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup Final and became manager almost immediately afterwards. Began with Birmingham City just after the Second War and moved to Luton in 1947 captaining the side which won promotion the Division One in 1955. Played in 393 League matches (all but five for the Hatters), won three England caps in 1954 and was elected Footballer of the Year in 1959. He was sacked by Luton after only a year as manager and became chief coach to Leeds United.
1959 The death of Hugh Simpson was announced from America. He had been a player with both Glossop and Raith Rovers before the First War and, after his playing days, had owned a billiards hall in Shettleston.
1962 Benfica win the European Cup by beating Real Madrid 5-3 in Amsterdam.
1981 Kevin Gage (17 years,15 days) became Wimbledon's youngest player when he took the field against Bury in Division Four.
1999 In a stormy Old Firm match at Parkhead referee Hugh Dallas is hit by a missile from the crowd.
