On this day in football history

1922 Huddersfield Town won the FA Cup against Preston North End with a single goal from the penalty spot in virtually the last minute of the match. The scorer was Billy Smith who had missed out on a Final appearance two years earlier through suspension.
1931 Death of Danny Steel at the age of 47. He had joined Tottenham Hotspur from Third Lanark in 1905 and had captained Spurs for several seasons.
1932 Death of Jimmy Auld, former Third Lanark and Scotland half-back at the age of 70. He was a member of the Sunderland team which was elected to the League in 1890, won the Championship in 1892, 1893 and 1895 and were runners-up in 1894.
1933 Darlington's John Downing scored a hat trick on his Football League debut against Carlisle.
1950 Arsenal beat Liverpool 2-0 in the FA Cup Final.
1961 Peterborough United beat Barrow 6-2 in the last Fourth Division match of their first season. They not only won the Championship but set a new Fourth Division scoring record of 134 goals. Centre-forward Billy Bly scored three that day to bring his tally to 52 and become the first player to hit 50 in a post-war season.
1970 Chelsea beat Leeds United in the FA Cup Final replay at Old Trafford 2-1. The match is regarded as one of the most violent in FA Cup history with David Webbb scoring the winner for the blues.
1970 Manchester City won the European Cup Winners' Cup by beating Gornik 2-1.
1996 Kevin Keegan manager of Newcastle United famously looses his temper on live TV in an outburst against Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson.
