On this day in football history

1898 Preston North End, Notts County, Bury, Blackburn Rovers and Stoke all finished bottom of Division One with 24 points. This is the highest number of bottom placed sides ever in any Football League division.
1906 German Club SC PreuBen Munster founded.
1913 Bert Freeman finished the season as Burnley's top-scorer for the third time. He had previously achieved the feat in 1909 and 1912.
1927 Bury full-back Sam Wynne collapsed when taking a free kick in the First Division match against Sheffield United at Brammall Lane. He died in the dressing room. He had played just 19 matches for the club since his transfer from Oldham Athletic earlier in the season. Began with Oldham in 1922 and played 145 matches (10 goals) for them. In October 1923, in a match against Manchester United he scored twice for each side.
1949 Wolverhampton Wanderers win the FA Cup Final 3-1 at Wembley against Leicester City.
1960 Tom Finney played his last League match for Preston North End against Luton Town at Deepdale. Preston won 2-0. He had joined the club as an amateur in 1938 and turned professional in 1941 shortly before going to the Middle East with the Eighth Army. In the post-war years he became one of the all-time great right-wingers although he was almost as effective at outside-left or centre-forward and played for England in those positions as well. He won 76 caps between 1946 and 1959 and scored 30 goals. For Preston he played 433 League games and scored 193 goals as well as 26 in the Cup. He captained them when they were beaten in the 1954 Cup Final by West Bromwich Albion. Three years after his retirement he appeared for Distillery in a European Cup match against Benfica.
1966 Billy Gray resigned as Millwall manager after leading the team to promotion for the second successive season in only a two year tenure. As a player he had made 505 League appearances between 1947 and 1965. He was an outside-right with Leyton Orient, Chelsea and Burnley and both an inside-forward and a full-back with Nottingham Forest with whom he won a Cup medal in 1959. He also played in a number of positions for Millwall.
1983 Wrexham goalkeeper Eddie Niedzwiecki became the first Football League player to be sent off three times in first class matches in one season.
1988 Peter Shilton Derby County's goalkeeper breaks Terry Paine's all time appearance record when he plays his 825th match against Watford in a 1-1 draw at Vicarage Road.
1993 Tommy Caton former player with Manchester City and Arsenal defender dies of a heart attack aged 30.
