1915 The Italian FA declare Genoa Champions when the season is abandoned due to the Great War.

1920 Neil Harris, Partick Thistle centre-forward, transferred to Newcastle United. Signed for Thistle in 1913 and during the First War guested for Fulham as well as various Scottish clubs. When peacetime soccer resumed he scored 22 goals in 39 League matches for Thistle during the 1919-1920 season. He had just over five seasons with Newcastle during which he won a FA Cup medal in 1924 and led Scotland's line against england at Wembley in the same year. In 1925 he moved to Notts County and, after two seasons, Oldham Athletic. Made his last first class appearance in 1929 for Third Lanark. In the Football League he scored 129 goals in 263 matches although, because of the poor records for Scottish football before the First War, it is harder to establish his Scottish League career. However about 200 goals in 400 matches would be about right for the two leagues combined. He was the father of John Harris who was Chelsea centre-half from 1945-55 and later manager of Chester and Sheffield United.

1954 In a warm-up game for the World Cup Finals in Switzerland England suffered her heaviest defeat in a full international when beaten 7-1 by Hungary in Budapest. At Wembley the previous November Hungary not only became the first side to beat England at home but also inflicted her heaviest home defeat when they won 6-3.

1957 Death of Jimmy "Tadger" Stewart; aninside-forward with Sheffield Wednesday and Newcastle United before the First War. He won a FA Cup medal with Wednesday in 1907 and a runners-up medal with United in 1911. Played three times for England between 1907 and 1911.

1959 Blackpool signed Barnsley winger Arthur Kaye who at just over 5'3" is one of the smallest players ever to have played in the Football League. He was a former England Scoolboy international who signed for Barnsley in 1950 and gained U-23 honours in 1956. Remained at Bloobfield Road for only one season before moving to Middlesbrough and, five years later, Colchester United. Played his 500th League game during the 1965-66 and, by the end of that season, had scored 103 goals in 506 matches.

1973 Liverpool win the UEFA Cup despite losing the second leg 2-0 to Borussia Monchengladbach. They had won the first leg at Anfield 3-0.

1987 Liam "Chippy" Brady scores ae Eire shock Brazil 1-0.

1994 Neville Southall becomes Wales's most capped player when he wins his 74th Cap against Edstonia in Tallin.

2002 Manchester United star Roy Keane is sent home from Eire's World Cup training camp in Saipan. He had a bust up with the camp the day before but was persuaded to stay, and in a team meeting today argued with manager Mick McCarthy and was promptly sent home. The Irish have to play the competition with 22 men as he was in the official squad and could not be replaced as he was not injured.
