1894 Alex Smith signed for Rangers. He became their outside-left for the next 22 years and was undoubtedly the greatest player in that position prior to the First War. He played 20 times for Scotland and 14 times for the Scottish League. With Rangers he won 7 League Championships and 2 Scottish Cups. With the exception of a short period immediately after the War Rangers used only two outside-lefts in 39 years: Alex Smith and Alan Morton.
1916 Death of Willie Foulke former Sheffield United and England goalkeeper at the age of 40. A giant of a man at 6'2" and 19 stones when he signed for United in 1894 he is reputed to have weighed over 22 stones when he left the first class game in 1907. He won a League Championship medal in 1898 and FA Cup medals in 1899, 1901 (runners-up) and 1902. Gained his only England cap in 1897 against Wales. In April 1905 he joined Chelsea and captained them in their first League season before moving to Bradford City a year later. Ill health forced his retirement in 1907. His death was due to pneumonia which he contracted on Blackpool sands where he ran a goalkeeping sideshow.
1930 The Football Association permanently suspended Scotland's goalkeeper John Ewart for offering bribes to players.
1937 Alex James played his last League match; for Arsenal against Bolton Wanderers at Highbury. In eight years with the club he played in four League Championship sides and two Cup winning sides although he missed the 1932 Final through injury. He won four of his eight Scottish caps while at Highbury and played in 231 League matches scoring 26 goals.
1953 Arsenal's home 3-2 victory over Burnley means that they are Champions for a record seventh time.
1954 West Bromwich Albion beat Preston North End 3-2 in the FA Cup Final with Frank Griffin scoring the winner in the 88th minute.
1959 Billy Wright, captain of England and Wolverhampton Wanderers, was elected an honourary life member of the Football Association in recognition of his winning in excess of 100 England caps.
1974 England's 1966 World Cup-winning manager Alf Ramsey was sacked and Joe Mercer took over as caretaker.
1976 Southampton beat Manchester United 1-0 in the FA Cup Final with the winner scored by Booby Stokes in the 83rd minute.
