Although the foremost club in the early years of Scottish football they were at a disadvantage once professionalism was legalised and the vast majority of their best players had joined the professional ranks.
1927 England beat Belgium 9-1 in Brussels. Their goals were shared amongst the forwards with Bill Dean (Everton) scoring three, George Brown (Huddersfield Town) and Arthur Rigby (Blackburn Rovers) two apiece and the two wingers Joe Hulme (Arsenal) and Louis Page (Burnley) getting one each.
1958 Former Hungarian international Ferenc Puskas, who left the country during the 1956 uprising, joined Real Madrid. On the orders of F.I.FA he had not been allowed to sign for a club outside Hungary for 18 months. He was a member of the Hungarian side which beat England at Wembley in November 1953; the first continental side to beat England at home. Altogether he was capped 84 times including the 1954 World Cup Final when Hungary were beaten 3-2 by West Germany. He later made four appearances for Spain and played in three European Champions Cup Finals for Real Madrid; winning the competition twice. He eventually retired from first class football in 1966 when he was reputedly 39 years old.
