On this day in football history
- 1895 Middlesbrough beat Old Carthusians 2-1 in the FA Amateur Cup Final. They are the only current Football League side to have won this trophy in their earlier years.
- 1936 A Southern Section record crowd of 42,975 saw Coventry play against Luton.
- 1938 East Fife beat Kilmarnock 4-2 in the Scottish Cup Final Replay after the original match had been drawn 1-1. This meant that they became the first Second Division side to win the trophy.
- 1946 Charlton Athletic right-half Herbert Turner scored for both sides within a minute in their FA Cup Final match against Derby County. In the 81st minute he deflected a shot into his own net and then in the 82nd minute equalised with a 25 yard free kick. These were the only goals in normal time but Derby scored three in extra time to lift the Cup with a 4-1 victory.
- 1959 Port Vale became the first champions of the newly-formed Fourth Division.
- 1974 After 36 years in the First Division Manchester United were relegated. Ironically their former player Denis Law scored the only goal of the game for local rivals Manchester City.
