Mawene spent the first half of the 2000-01 campaign settling in with the reserve team at Derby County, his progress being hampered by a knee injury.
He made his Premiership debut at Southampton at the turn of the year and as injuries and suspensions took hold towards the close of the season, he made several appearances in a right wing-back role.
A promising young defender blessed with pace and good vision he is a fine example of the talent being nurtured at Pride Park.
Mawene joined Preston North End in July 2004 with a two-year contract.
His PNE contract was extended to June 2010 in August 2007.
