The end of August 2000 was a time of comings and goings within Chelsea's central defensive complement: out went popular Brazilian Emerson Thome to Sunderland and in came Dutch superstar Winston Bogarde from Barcelona on a Bosman free transfer and a contract to June 2004.
His arrival had an element of farce with press reports claiming that Chelsea boss Luca Vialli was unaware of his transfer but a few days later Vialli was on his way and Winston began his career at Stamford Bridge under new coach Claudio Ranieri.
The classy defender took time to settle and then suffered a knee injury at Ipswich Town on Boxing Day and this brought a premature end to his first-team involvement.
