Half-back 'Sandy' Higgins played in Newton Heath's final season but was not retained by the 'new' club after fracturing an ankle half way through the season.
Signed as Newcastle prepared for their first season in the First Division, William - or Sandy, as he was known - provided a cool head as the Magpies settled in to the new exalted status.
