After starting the 2000-01 season on the left side of midfield for Sheffield United, Wayne soon reverted to his role as a left wing back. He continued to show an improved positional sense and was a regular in the Blades' line-up until moving to Premiership Newcastle United early in the New Year. He initially arrived on a month's loan, but his form persuaded manager Sir Bobby Robson to make the move permanent as he sought to fill the gap left by Didier Domi's departure. Calm under pressure, he provided a balance that the Magpies had previously lacked. He quickly settled into the team and seemed comfortable at the higher level.
