PositionDefender/Right back

Barton broke Newcastle's club record and became British football's most expensive defender when he was signed for £4million. He gave seven years of brilliant service as an attacking right-back.

A versatile player, he was primarily a right back, but also featured at left back, in the centre of defence and in a 'holding' midfield role. Sound in the tackle, he had a sharp positional awareness, and was very effective when pushing down the wing to deliver crosses into the box.

Barton's contract with Derby County was cancelled by mutual consent in September 2003 before joining Queens Park Rangers on non-contract terms.

He returned to Wimbledon in February 2004 but announced his retirement in the following month.
