He left to play in Germany for Werder Bremen in 1994 and after an indifferent spell moved to Spain to play for Racing Santander in 1996. He played in the 1996 European Championship Finals and when fit is the starting striker. He had his troubles at Racing Santander when he called for coach Gustavo Benitez to be sacked he moved back to his first club Moscow Spartak in 2001. He is a strong running front man who can also play as a target man.

Vladimir scored in Russia's final game in the 2002 World Cup finals - a 3-2 defeat by Belgium.
