Montella began his career at Serie B side Empoli where he spent five seasons before leaving for Genoa in the summer of 1995.
He scored twenty-one goals in thirty four matches and was controversially transferred in the summer of 1996 to Sampdoria in Serie A as they bought out half of his contract from Empoli before Genoa could do so.
He made an immediate impact scoring twelve goals in eighteen matches in his first season and only moved to Roma after Sampdoria were relegated at the end of the 1998-1999 season.
He had made his international debut in June 1999 against Wales.
