Following a much-publicised transfer request and the arrival of Alpay during the close season, Ugo Ehiogu's first-team opportunities at Aston Villa suddenly became very limited at the beginning of the 2000-01 season.
He featured in just a couple of Premier League games and it came as no real surprise when he moved on to Middlesbrough for a new club record fee in October.
He readily joined in Boro's backs-to-the-wall fight to save their Premier League place and showed some fine spirit at all times.
Well received by the Riverside faithful, his aerial power and control allied to some tough and relentless tackling enabled him to dominate the centre of defence.
He won a deserved recall for England against Spain in February when he scored in the 3-0 victory.
Ugo joined Sheffield United in January 2008 with a contract to June 2009.
