A giant centre forward, Tony Hateley became Chelsea's first £100,000 player after joining from Aston Villa. He joined Liverpool from Chelsea for £96,000. He formed an effective partnership with Roger Hunt but was targeted by opposition defences leading to injury lay-offs. He was eventually replaced by Alun Evans and moved on to Coventry.
