England international Tony Dorigo (nicknamed 'Aussie') joined Chelsea for a then record fee (£475,000) from Aston Villa.

Stoke managed to secure Tony's services from under the noses of Wolves during the 2000 close season and although he sometimes struggled with the volume of matches he had a fine season at the Britannia Stadium and was appointed team captain in the autumn. An experienced left back his quality was an asset to City and he impressed with his excellent vision. Tony announced his retirement from football in the summer after playing in more then 500 Football League and Premiership games during the previous 18 years.
