Carss made a handful of appearances for Carlisle United in the early part of 2000-01 but although he produced a particularly effective performance at Darlington, he was quickly on his way to Oldham Athletic in October.

He went on to have a spectacular season at Boundary Park scoring the 'Goal of the Season' to clinch a 1-0 victory over Bristol Rovers on Easter Monday. Operating mainly in a central midfield role, he worked tirelessly and deservedly received the Latics' 'Player of the Season' award following some excellent performances.
