Widdrington was a regular in the Port Vale line-up in 2000-01 until dropping out through suspension in the New Year. Although he was the club captain he then found it difficult to win his place back and he was forced to sit on the subs' bench for the LDV Vans Trophy final win over Brentford at Cardiff's Millenium Stadium. He netted one of Vale's goals of the season with a cracking 30-yard volley at Swindon in January but was eventually released at the end of the campaign. He is a hard-tackling midfield player who is adept at breaking up opposition attacks.
Widdrington joined Macclesfield Town in August 2003 in a one-year deal that was extended to June 2005 in June 2004 but he was made available for transfer in January 2005 and returned to Port Vale on non-contract terms.
