Although thought to have signed on a permanent basis for Middesbrough from Newcastle United, the transfer was cancelled by the Football League. In two spells at Newcastle, Tommy proved to be a stylish forward who could play in all five attacking roles but appear to lack the consistency he strived for. He was at his best on the left side.
