Knox followed Eddie McCreadie from East Stirling to Chelsea but remained a fringe player at Stamford Bridge. Arriving at Gallowgate as the Magpies closed in on promotion to the First Division in 1965, Knox remained on the fringes of the United squad in the next two seasons.
