Tomas was formerly called Gustafsson until he changed his surname to Antonelius during the 2001-02 close season.

He began his career at Bromma-Pojkarna in the Swedish Second Division before moving to the First Division and AIK Solna for the 1997 season. His cultured performances at right back bought him to the attention of Coventry City for whom he signed in December 1999 for £250,000. He could not break into the first team or the national team as the form of compatriot Roland Nilsson and injury limited his appearances.

He made his international debut in August 1999 against Austria. He made the squad for Euro 2000 and played in the match against Italy. He moved from Coventry City to FC Copenhagen in March 2002 in an attempt to make the World Cup Squad, and after two seasons in the international wilderness he earned a recall to the squad in April. He looks to have won the starting berth at right back despite not playing in qualification.
