With Derby County struggling against relegation, it was felt that more attacking options were required to add some variety to an injury-hit side and Jim Smith looked to the Las Palmas and Iceland attacking midfielder to provide these. Signed initially on loan with an option available on a permanent deal, he had previously been with Belgian club Genk where he had enjoyed a productive spell playing alongside Rams' striker Branko Strupar.

A versatile player who is equally at home playing just behind the front two or in a left-sided midfield role, he made his debut as a substitute in the home game against Tottenham Hotspur in March, but rarely made the starting line-up. After due consideration, County decided not to pursue a permanent signing.

Thórdur joined Stoke City in January 2005 with a contract to June 2006.
