Having developed with Bayern Munich from a very early age, Thomas opted for a change of scene and was snapped up by Aston Villa.
Capped by Germany at youth level, he first came to prominence playing for his country in the 1999 World Under-17 Youth Championships in New Zealand.
Thomas returned to Germany in July 2005 when he joined VfB Stuttgart with a two-year contract.
He joined Everton in October 2012 with a contract to January 2013 that was then extended to June 2013.
