A right-sided player who can take either a midfield, full-back or centre-back role, Thomas began his senior career with OB Odense, later making a move to Italy where he played firstly for Udinese. In the 1998 close season he moved on to AC Milan and he featured regularly in the team that won the Serie A title in 1998-99.
He made his international debut against Hungary in April 1994 and has since been a regular in the national side. Taking the key berth in the Denmark defence, Thomas was an influential player in the 2002 World Cup finals. It was an ideal opportunity to put his disappointing Euro 2000 finals behind him when injuries carried throughout the preceding months appeared to take their toll.
Thomas joined Norwich City in July 2004 with a one-year contract.
