West began his long career at domestic clubs Sharks Port Harcourt, Engugu Rangers and Julius Berger before moving to France to play for Auxerre in 1994. He had played for the Nigerian team in the African Youth Championship in 1993 and made his international debut soon afterwards in May 1994 against Sweden. Soon a regular in the squad, he was a member of the team that won gold at the 1996 Olympics and also appeared in all four of his country's games in the 1998 World Cup finals. At club level, he moved to Auxerre from Julius Berger and helped his club to a double of the French League and Cup in 1995-96. A move to Serie A followed in 1997 and he won a UEFA Cup winners' medal with Inter Milan in 1998. He subsequently joined AC Milan, then helped Derby County escape relegation from the Premiership in 2000-01 before moving to Kaiserslautern soon after the start of the 2001-02 campaign.
West joined Plymouth Argyle in July 2005 with a one-year contract but it was cancelled after four months.
