Thurgood returned to England after spending two seasons with Steve Perryman's Shimizu S-Pulse in the Japanese J-League and, after impressing in a trial match, signed a contract with Third Division Southend United.
A tigerish midfield player combines tough tackling with the ability to play the simple ball.
After a loan spell, Thurgood joined Gillingham in January 2008 with a contract to June 2009.
He joined Dagenham & Redbridge in July 2009 with a two-year contract but retired in September 2010 due to a knee injury.
