Once a junior with Lincoln City, Stuart opted to complete his education and it was from the Unibond League club Lincoln United that he joined Premiership Chelsea. Still waiting to make his senior debut at Stamford Bridge he spent the summer of 2000 gaining experience in Sweden with Kalmar FF and after spending the first half of 2000-01 with the Blues' reserves he went out on loan to Third Division Mansfield Town to cover for injuries. A central or right-sided defender he made his Football League debut for the Stags at Blackpool and impressed with his skill in the air and distribution.
