After a series of loan spells at various clubs, Stuart finally made the break from Newcastle United and signed for Darlington in the summer of 2000.
He immediately made an impact with some tenacious midfield displays and his ability to pick out runners with pinpoint passes.
He scored a amazing goal which proved to be the winner in the Worthington Cup first round tie against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground, picking up a loose clearance from David Beasant in the centre circle and firing it straight back into the net.
However, he was surprisingly transferred to Plymouth Argyle in March following an influx of new signings at Feethams.
He proved a useful acquisition for the Pilgrims covering for the injured David Worrell on the right side of defence but was released at the end of the season.
Stuart had brief spells back in the Football League in 2001-02 with Carlisle United and Exeter City.
