Campbell initially joined Grimsby Town on a month's loan in September 2000 but created such a favourable impression that he stayed until the end of the season, establishing himself as a regular in the Mariners' first team.
A versatile midfield player, he mostly appeared on the right-hand side from where he made some penetrating runs into the box.
Campbell joined Bristol Rovers in July 2004 with a contract to December 2006.
His Rovers contract was extended to June 2009 in May 2007.
