Houston joined Chelsea as a young player but suffered from injury and moved on to Brentford. A Tommy Docherty signing (having played for him at Chelsea), Houston soon became a stalwart in United's defence able to play at both left back and centre back. He won a Second Division championship medal in 1975 but was unlucky enough to miss the 1977 Cup Final win over Liverpool which gave Arthur Albiston his big chance. He later developed into a quality left back and Scotland international. Later took up a managerial career.
