Wood is Macclesfield's longest-serving player and is extremely popular with the fans, not only for his playing ability but also for his sense of humour. He appeared regularly in midfield in the early part of last season until the partnership of Chris Priest and Kevin Keen was formed, after which he rarely featured in the senior side although he often captained the reserves. Now approaching the veteran stage of his career he is currently studying for the UEFA 'B' coaching certificate.
