Thompson, who was first team coach at Yeovil Town when they reached the Football League in 2003, has also played for the RAF and the Combined Services.
Although usually restricted to rare appearances for the Glovers' reserves team, Thompson retained his playing registration to provide cover in emergencies.
Notably, at the age of 45, he was an unused sub in the Carling Cup game at Charlton Athletic in August 2008.
