Ireland's captain following Roy Keane's shock departure, Steve travelled to his third World Cup finals and became the first player to win 100 international caps for the Republic in the dramatic drawn game with Germany on 5 June.
After joining Liverpool from Dundalk for a bargain £20,000 in 1986, 'Stan' made his international debut before he had made his first appearance for the Anfield giants.
He soon became used to winning honours as he was part of the Reds teams that won the FA Cup in 1989 and Championship in 1990.
Somewhat surprisingly, he was allowed to join Aston Villa for £1.1million in 1991 and soon made his mark at Villa Park as they finished runners-up to Manchester United in the first Premiership season.
Steve returned to Liverpool in 1998 before switching back to Villa in December 2000.
A model professional, he remains a regular in former England boss Graham Taylor's side, and broke Tony Cascarino's record for Ireland appearances when he won his 89th cap in the World Cup qualifier in Estonia in June 2001.
Although, he has played much of his career at left back, his fierce will-to-win is now usually employed at the heart of the Republic's defence.
Steve joined Coventry City in August 2003 with a two-year contract.
