Simonsen had a frustrating time at Everton in 2000-01 when he failed to make a single first-team start for the Toffees.
His only glimpse of the Premiership came as a 90th minute substitute for the injured Paul Gerrard against West Ham United in December.
Winning an FA Premier Reserve League championship medal was scant consolation, as he sought to build on his limited Premiership experience.
An England Under-21 international, Simonsen was regarded as one of the brightest goalkeeping talents in the country.
Simonsen joined Stoke City in July 2004 with a two-year contract that was extended to June 2008 in July 2005 and to June 2010 in July 2007.
He joined Preston North End in August 2012 with a one-year contract that was cancelled in January 2013.
