Macauley was a trainee with Manchester City but, although he signed professional forms with them, he was unable to break into the first team reckoning and was released. After a spell in non-League football he was signed by the astute Dario Gradi for just £25,000 from Fleetwood Town and has gone on to repay that fee many times over with almost a decade of fine performances.
Macauley completed a permenent move to Macclesfield Town in March 2003 with a contract to June 2004 which was subsequently cancelled by mutual consent in April 2004.
